Captain Kirk begins to behave oddly, acting uncharacteristically tense and erratic. After he orders the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> into Romulan space, the ship is immediately surrounded by Romulan warships. Placing Chief Engineer Scott in command of the starship, Kirk and Lieutenant Commander Spock beam aboard the Romulan flagship to meet with the Romulan Commander. Kirk tells the woman that his ship entered Romulan territory because of equipment malfunction, but Spock denounces the explanation and informs the Commander that Kirk ordered them here due to his reduced mental stability - Kirk becomes furious at his First Officer's mutinous act. The Romulan Commander orders that the <I>Enterprise</I> be taken to the Romulan base, but Scotty vehemently refuses. When Doctor McCoy beams across to the Romulan flagship to tend to Kirk, who has now become irrational to the point of violence, the captain attacks Spock - who reacts without thinking and kills him using a Vulcan death grip. The doctor takes Kirk's body back to the <I>Enterprise</I>, leaving Spock on the Romulan ship; the Romulan Commander begins to show an attraction for the Vulcan, and she attempts to entice him into defecting across to the Romulan side. However, she is unaware that the recent events are merely a complex ploy to steal the cloaking device from her vessel. Back aboard the <I>Enterprise</I>, Doctor McCoy revives Kirk and then uses cosmetic surgery to change his appearance to that of a Romulan. Kirk returns to the Romulan ship and attempts to steal the cloaking device...
